5B. Facilitate safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use

Model and facilitate safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (ISTE, 2011)

One of our first projects in the SPU DEL program is the Digital Readiness Project in which we are asked how our institution is using technology to improve education.  My project included an interview with both the dean of the computer science department as well as the manager of the engagement and learning department at my school.  To prepare for these interviews, I reviewed Ribble and Miller’s three categories of responsible digital citizenship.

As I mention in my Digital Readiness Project, these three categories are particularly relevant to computer science students when engaging with the open source community.  How the students present themselves in both the code they submit to the open source community as well as their engagement with other open source community members will establish their digital footprint.  It is vital that computer science students use the three categories listed above to become respected and valued members of the open source community.
