Coach teachers in and model effective use of technology tools and resources to continuously assess student learning and technology literacy by applying a rich variety of formative and summative assessments aligned with content and student technology standards. (ISTE, 2011)
One of the opportunities that opened to me as part of my participation in the SPU Digital Education Leadership program is learning more about new tools and technologies to improve the learning experience. One area that I wanted to improve is how I assessed student performance in my programming courses. I realized that some of the same tools that I used to flip my classroom could also be used for assessments. Currently, I use a combination of programming assignments, class exercises, and quizzes/exams to assess my student’s learning. It is vital that students submit their own work in each of these assessments and not simply provide a solution from a tutor or another student. I wanted a tool that would help me proctor in-class quizzes and exams to make sure that students were submitting their own work. I realized that the Vision Pro class management software I used for flipping my classroom could be used as a proctoring tool.
My use of the Vision Pro software had originally focused on giving individual instruction as well as allowing students to display their work to other students. I knew that the Vision Pro software also let me lock down a machines keyboard and mouse so that students would pay attention to a demonstration or a class discussion. The Vision Pro software also allows me to monitor every classroom computer to make sure that a student is staying on topic, and not sharing their work with others or submitting other’s work as their own. As a bonus, the Vision Pro software let’s me see students that get stuck on a particular quiz or exam question, allowing me to provide individual help or assistance.
